L. Kain, one of the oldest and best known citizens of the eastern portion of Douglas county, dropped dead about 8 o'clock last Saturday morning in his field where he had gone to sow alfalfa. He was 72 years of age, having lived considerably longer than the average time allotted to man. Although the weather was very unfavorable there was present at the funeral on Monday a large attendance of old-time neighbors who came out to show their respect for ne whom they had known for so long and well. The members of the bereaved family, which consists of wife, two sons and one daughter, have the sympathy of all who know them. Alexander Louis Kain was born in St. Lawrence county, New York, December 31, 1829. He died at his home near Golddale, April 12, 1902. Mr. Kain came west while yet a young man, and was in California when the war broke out, and enlisted in that state. At the close of the war he came to Colorado and located in Douglas county which has since been his home. About 20 years ago he was married to the wife who survives him, Senator J. F. Gardner, then justice of the peace, performing the ceremony. Mr. Kain was a good citizen and an upright and honest man, and his memory will long be cherished by his neighbors and acquaintances."
