He was at the battles of Winchester, Antietam (wounded), Gettysburg, The Wilderness Campaign, Spottsylvania Courthouse and was discharged, a sargeant, after the battle of Petersburg, in 1864. After the war Elisha settled in northern Wilson County on the Verdigris river, and established a store in August 1864. Elisha and his brother Oscar were traders with the Osage Indians. By 1857 settlers had begun arriving in the vicinity. When the new town of Coyville, Wilson Co., Kansas was named it was named in their honor. Coyville was the first county seat in Wilson county. (It is the only town with that name in the United States.) The first Post Office in Wilson County was established at Coyville in 1866. Elisha's brother Oscar was the first Postmaster. The mail arrived by Pony Express from Fort Belmont in southern Woodson County. Coyville, Kansas is the only town in the United States with that name. Obituary - "In the death of Elisha Coy at his home in Coyville, Christmas morning another old settler and community builder passed in the Great Beyond. Elisha Coy was born in Chenango-co., New York, January 9. 1833. His father was Ephriam Coy, a Connecticut man, and his mother was Harriet Parsons, a native of New York state. In an early day the parents moved to Ohio, later to Indiana, and in 1858 came to Jefferson-co., Kansas. The father died in the latter county about 1858 leaving nine children. Elisha Coy was educated in county schools of Ohio, and when the war broke out entered Company K, 8th Ohio Infantry and participated in nearly all of the battles in which the regiment was engaged, among which were Gettysburg, Antietam, the Wilderness campaign, Spottsylvania Court House and Petersburg. He was discharged in front of the latter place in 1864, returned home and in August, came to Kansas. He came to Wilson-co., with his brother Oscar, conducted a trading post on the land where Coyville is now located. When the Indians were sent South into the Indian Territory, Oscar and Elisha established a trading post in Pawhuska. When the post in the Indian Territory was abandoned, Oscar Coy went to the state of Washington and Elisha returned to Coyville and spent the remainder of his life in retirement. In 1876 Elisha was married to Jennie Scanlon, who survives him. Contrary to general belief Elisha Coy was not the founder of the town of Coyville, but instead the town was laid out by his brother, Oscar and his wife, Eliza Coy on the 4th day of May, 1855."
