Fast, age thirty-four, living just north of Roanoke, was instantly killed Tuesday morning when his light truck was struck by a northbound Indiana Service Corporation car at the "Fast Crossing" just behind the Fast residence, on a slightly used by-road. Fast's body was thrown sixty-five feet north of the crossing and twenty feet west of the center of the track, the impact crushing his skull and breaking the upper left leg in several places. He was dead when persons on the interurban car, which was derailed, reached him. The Interurban stopped after bumping over the ties for about 100 yards. Coroner G. M. Nie said that death was instant, resulting from the fracture of the skull. His investigation showed that views of both the driver and the crew of the interurban car were obstructed by bushes and weeds along the by-road and the interurban track. Conductor Clark W. Fults and Motorman Ora Jacobs, both of this city, who were in charge of the interurban train, No. 10, were questioned briefly by Coroner Nie, who arranged to get their detailed statements Tuesday night. The coroner announced that his verdict would be accidental death. His investigation showed that ten feet east of the interurban track and down an incline, it would be impossible for a driver to see more than forty feet south of the crossing because of bushes. The same obstructions made it impossible for the crew of the train to see an automobile on the by-road. Mr. and Mrs. Fast, their sons, and A. C. Fast, father of the accident victim, have been living in the old Fast homestead for some time. After the tragedy persons who gathered found there was nobody at home, and for a time it was feared that the small son, Dickie, also had been on the truck and was killed. Search through the weeds and bushes, however, failed to show any trace of the boy, although it did reveal a police dog with a broken leg which evidently had been on the truck. Mrs. Fast was at work in the Arnold store in this city at the time of the accident, and the son was at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Goshorn, of Fort Wayne. A. C. Fast, the father, was in Fort Wayne at the time of the accident, at the city market. Mr. Fast was born in June, 1894, to Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Fast, and was married December 15, 1920, to Ethel Eva Goshorn, of this city. Surviving are the widow, their small son, Dickie, the father, and a sister, Mrs. Guy Stump, of this city. Funeral arrangements had not been made late Tuesday afternoon. During the World War, Mr. Fast was a sergeant-major, the highest rank of a non-commissioned officer, in the headquarters company of the 15th Field Artillery. He enlisted June 27, 1917, at Fort Wayne and was assigned immediately to the artillery regiment. December 12, of the same year, he left for overseas, and returned with the same outfit on February 11, 1919. He was discharged on March 11, 1919. While overseas, Fast was in the Chateau-Thiery, Soissons and St. Mihiel engagements. During one of them he suffered a wound in his leg from shrapnel. While a resident of this city Mr. Fast was employed in the Farmers Trust company of which his father, A. C. Fast, was president, for several years. Burial will be at the I. O. O. F. cemetery at Roanoke.
