Read More	Obituary from The Billings Gazette 10/07/2009: Jim Arnett was born on Aug. 17, 1926, in Alliance, Neb., to James A. Arnett and Jennie Smith Arnett. Jim went to school in the first grade in Greybull, Wyo. The second through fifth grades at the Roosevelt School in Billings. The sixth through the ninth grades at Lincoln Junior High School, and then finished the 10th through the 12th grades at Billings Senior High School. Jim graduated in 1944. His first job was at Hopper's Greenhouse in the Heights. He got out of school at noon, and then rode his bicycle there to work every day. His next job was at the City Food Market while going to high school. In 1945, Jim was drafted into the United States Air Force. He went to the Aleutian Islands in 1945, and stayed there for 18 months. He worked in the mess hall as a cook. Later, he became the mess sergeant. While in the Aleutian Islands, Jim played fast pitch softball and had a very good team. Jim pitched most of the games. While on Adak, Jim met a mess sergeant named Sergeant Everly. He taught Jim a lot about cooking. Jim said he was the best cook he ever met. Jim came back to the United States in 1947, and he was sent to Roswell, N.M., for a while. Jim volunteered to go to Germany in the Air Lift Program. While in Germany, Jim got rheumatic fever, and was sent to Oliver General Hospital in Augusta, Ga. While there, he started playing golf, and enjoyed it very much. Jim was given an honorable medical discharge in March of 1949. He was discharged with the rank of staff sergeant. Jim enrolled in the Eastern Montana College on the G.I. Bill of Rights. Due to some unforeseen events, he was unable to finish college. Jim started playing fast pitch softball in the Billings City League in June 1949, and continued to play until 1962. He received a temporary job at the "Billings News Agency" that lasted for 24 years. Jim continued his career in fast pitch softball as district commissioner and sometimes acting as state commissioner. He was able to participate in 10 to 12 state tournaments. Two great honors were bestowed on him. The first was having the ball field at the North Park named the "Jim Arnett Field." The second honor Jim received was being inducted into the Montana Softball Hall of Fame in 1996. Jim started the local Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame with the aid of several of the men that played softball with him. He had an Annual Old Times Reunion for 10 consecutive years. The best part of playing fast pitch softball was meeting so many fine men who became friends for life. While working at the Billings News, Jim said that the best part of his life was when he met the "Love of his Life - Janet Hall." He had never before met such a special and lovely person. They dated from 1962 to 1964. In 1964, they were married, and were married 40-plus years. A wonderful addition was added to their family when our dear daughter Lenné came along in 1972. This made our life complete. She was a very special child and loved by many people. Jim was very active in the Seventh Day Adventist Church from 1962 until his final days of illness. He held various positions in the church. Jim had a very positive, optimistic and cheerful attitude. People enjoyed being around him. Jim was preceded in death by his mother, father, three sisters and one brother. Survivors are his wife, daughter and a multitude of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Smith's West Chapel, 304 34th St. West. Military honors will be provided, followed by cremation.
