Description	:	John served for the whole of the Civil War with the 21st OVI, Company D. John entered as a private and rose to the rank of sergeant. John was wounded several times in combat, he was able to recover and return to the field each time. John survived the battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, when on the evening of the second day of the battle, September 20, 1863, his regiment was left in place on the battlefield holding their position, providing cover for the Cumberland Army's retreat back to Chattanooga. General Thomas had the advantage of the 21st OVI position on Horseshoe Ridge and the fact they were outfitted with repeating colt rifles having superior fire power to create the ruse of a numerically superior force that was holding their positions; this strategy helped stall the advance of the confederates thus aiding in the successful withdrawal of the Union forces as the darkness fell. Inevitably the 21st exhausted all their ammunition and resorted to the bayonet until finally they were surrounded, overrun and captured in the twilight. More than three quarters of John's regiment was either killed, wounded or made prisoners of war; their colors were lost as well as two commanding officers. Fortunately, John, along with about a quarter the 21st managed to escape off Horseshoe Ridge in the darkness and confusion when their confederate captors, for a short period, received fire from the retreating 35th Ohio and 9th Indiana; these were the very last shots fired in the Battle of Chickamauga. The escaping remnants of the 21st were able to find their way back to the Union lines at Chattanooga because of the clear night and the bright moon shining through tree tops.... In the final analysis, the Ohio 21st along with the 89th Ohio and the 22nd Indiana, whether by design or accident, never received timely orders from General Thomas to retire their position on the ridge, thus an historic stand ensued which materially complimented the Union's hold on the strategic prize of Chattanooga. The Ohio 21st remained obstinate to the Army of Tennessee to the bitter end, all the while the Army of the Cumberland was retreating back to defend Chattanooga. Later, nearing the very end of the Civil War, after "Marching to the Sea" with General Sherman, John 's luck finally ran out, and he was wounded and captured at the battle of Bentonville, North Carolina on March 19, 1865, when the Union line was briefly penetrated by Gen. Johnson's forces. Within a couple of weeks of being captured, John was liberated from the infamous Libby Prison when Richmond, Virginia fell to the Union troops on April 2-3, 1865. John went to Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio, to recover and be discharged. The hostilities of war had all but ceased by now; this was about a week before General Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Unfortunately, John didn't get to join in the famous "Grand Review of the Armies" with the rest of his surviving comrades of the 21st OVI as they advanced and marched in formation with the victorious Union Army through Washington DC. The resounding cadence of a whole army marching in dress parade down Pennsylvania Avenue had never before, nor has ever since been witnessed as on that glorious day in the latter part of May of 1865. After the war, John went home to Pandora, Ohio, and then later relocated to Hicksville, Ohio where he had a very successful business career and issued 10 children with his wife Anna Countryman from Jeromesville, Ohio; one child was born in Pandora, Ohio that died in infancy.
