Speer was born Apr. 28, 1895, in the Stony Point neighborhood. After graduating from the Muscotah High School he taught the Prospect Hill school one term and then entered K.S.A.C. at Manhattan. He enlisted in the officer's training camp at Ft. Riley and later was assigned to Co. I, 353rd Inf., 89th Division with the rank of sergeant. While home on a furlough on December 23, 1917 he was united in marriage to Miss Ruth Bushey. Serg. Speer sailed in June with his company to France. In the Argonne drive on November 2nd he received the wound which resulted in his death two days later in a field hospital. Joe Speer was a manly young man with fine prospects of a successful and useful life ahead of him. He was a member of the Methodist church and of the Masonic and Woodman lodges. He is survived by his widow, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Speer, one sister, Mrs. Myrtle Draper of Cummings, and two brothers, Albert of Atchison and Stephen at home. The Kansas Military Index at Kansas Historical Society shows that Joe R. Speer enlisted on October 2, 1917 and died of wounds on November 2, 1918. He was a student at Kansas State Agricultural College, Manhattan, Kansas. The plaque at the Kansas State University Memorial Stadium includes his name as one of the 48 Fallen during WWI. (see photo)
