Description	:	-Vietnam War- SP 5 A Co, 196 LGT INF BDE Sgt Larry Holtz was tragically lost as a ground casualty from a mortar attack. He had recently been promoted to sergeant. In letters home, he spoke of guarding the perimeter, and in his last letter he told of the largest mortar attack to date, on the night before. Soon after, Larry was hit by a mortar attack. Read More	-Vietnam War- SP 5 A Co, 196 LGT INF BDE Sgt Larry Holtz was tragically lost as a ground casualty from a mortar attack. He had recently been promoted to sergeant. In letters home, he spoke of guarding the perimeter, and in his last letter he told of the largest mortar attack to date, on the night before. Soon after, Larry was hit by a mortar attack. After helping some of his fellow sleeping soldiers to the bunker, he was the last in and hit by the mortar attack. He did make it into the bunker, but, he died of a metal fragment to his neck. He was near the Cambodian border in South Vietnam. He served in the same 196th Light Infantry Brigade as his step dad, Ed did in WWII. He was originally being sent to the Dominican Republic, but at the last minute, it was changed to Vietnam... Larry's military job was 71H20-Personnel Specialist. Just a few months after his over seas tour started, he advanced to rank SP5. He apparently did his job well, good soldier that he was. He received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals, among many others. In training, he received expert marksman medals, as shown in the shadow box photo. ********* Larry was small in stature, but looms large in the hearts of the Class of '64, Fremont, Nebraska. A true hero. In his letters, he often said, "when I come home". Sadly, he and so many of our young men did not. ******* Our classmate, Roger Sandeen, also a Vietnam War veteran and friend of Larry's, stated he played little league baseball with Larry, and that his Dad worked for Larry's Dad, Ed Holtz. When Elwood "Ed" Holtz married Larry's mother, Donna, he adopted Larry, and Larry's name was changed from Lawrence Dale McLaughlin, Jr. to Larry William Holtz. Later, Larry's mom and Ed had a daughter, Kathy who survives.
