Description	:	L.A. 'Shorty' DeFrance departed the earth on Aug. 28, 2006. He was born to Samuel Irwin DeFrance and Ethel Pearl DeFrance in Reed Point, on Dec.4, 1920. Shorty excelled in sports in high school and attended Montana State University for a short time. He married Loretta Elizabeth Segler on Aug. 15, 1941. Shorty served with the Army in the Pacific Theatre in World War II, and he later re-enlisted in the Air Force. He served in Japan during the Korean War. He was born to Samuel Irwin DeFrance and Ethel Pearl DeFrance in Reed Point, on Dec.4, 1920. Shorty excelled in sports in high school and attended Montana State University for a short time. He married Loretta Elizabeth Segler on Aug. 15, 1941. Shorty served with the Army in the Pacific Theatre in World War II, and he later re-enlisted in the Air Force. He served in Japan during the Korean War. Upon discharge in 1954, he moved his family to Seattle and for 25 years he owned and operated a bowling alley in Lake City, and retired in 1979. Shorty was always known as a "great guy" and helped many people in the course of his life. He lost his wife, Loretta, in 2000 and both his sons, Randy in 2003 and Larry in 2004. He is survived by his daughter, Peggy Dokken of Helena; his brother, Gene DeFrance of East Helena; his grandchildren, Jason and Sean DeFrance of Helena; Rogen Chhabra of Jackson, Miss.; and Hawkins and Laurel DeFrance of the Seattle area; and six great-grandchildren. Shorty will be greatly missed, but we take great consolation in the fact that he made a spiritual decision on Aug. 11, 2006, and accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. He was baptized on Aug. 24, 2006. He now resides in heaven with his beloved family and his great loss has turned to great joy. A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 15, from the Montana State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Harrison with Shorty's son-in-law, Rev. Bill Dokken officiating. A reception will follow at Jorgenson's Restaurant, 1720 11th Ave., Helena. The family prefers memorials are sent in Shorty's name to the donor's choice.
