| Description | : | A Sergeant in the 17th U.S. Infantry and wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg July 2, 1863 The following info comes courtesy of F.A.G. contributor Stonewall: Sergeant Smith was mortally wounded at Gettysburg. He was shot in the elbow on July 2, 1863 while aiding his brother in the vicinity of the Wheat Field. The two Smiths were rescued by Lt. Frank E. Stimsom of the 17th US Infantry.
