When at the age of three years the family moved to Poplar Bluff, MO., later to Miami, Okla., and then in 1903 to Holton, where he has since resided. He attended the Holton public schools, continuing his education later in Campbell College. Following his school period he was in the employ of the F.W. Dixon Nursery, during which time he was a member of Company B and when the difficulty with Mexico arose, he went with that company on its first call to the border. On August 5, 1917, he enlisted for service in the World War and was assigned to Camp Doniphan, Lawton, Okla. and in April, 1918, went with Company B, 137th Infantry, 35th Division overseas. The experience of those 13 months in Europe associated with the horrors of war, were never effaced from his memory. He returned with his Company and received his discharge from the service in May 1919. July 15, 1917, he was united in marriage to Rose, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McAsey, living north of Holton. His educational training and his service in the war won for him the appointment in August, 1919, of carrier of Route No. 1 out of Holton. His uniform kindness and consideration of his patrons on the route made him deservedly popular with those he had to serve. It was only natural that after years of active association with military affairs he should be an enthusiastic leader in the American Legion. His interest in sports led him with several others of our citizens to organize the Holton Fish and Game Club of which he was secretary. His enthusiasm for golf and the fine record he made on the course led to his selection as a member of the board of directors of the Holton Country Club. His death occurred suddenly from heart ailment early Saturday morning, April 20. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon. Besides the bereaved wife, he leaves his mother, Susanna Beems, two brothers, Harold of Holton and Ray of Clay Center; two sisters, Mrs. John Allen of Holton and Mrs. Amanda Routh of Topeka; also eight nephews and two nieces. The high regard and esteem in which he was held by the patrons of his route and other friends was attested to by the profusion of flowers and the large attendance at the funeral service held at the Gabel & McAsey Funeral Home with the Rev. John J Ryan in charge. The Dynamo Quartet furnished the music. Casket bearers were Ed Coulson, Fred Petit, Floyd Hollenbeck, Reuben Moore, Glenn Rings, Harvey Greenly, Thomas Lines. The rural mail carriers of Jackson county, the American Legion and a large contingent of Company E attended in a body. Burial was made in Mt. Calvary cemetery.
