Camp 78th Ohio Inf’ty Vols Vicksburg Miss Dec 8 Daniel McLane Dear Friend Having heard that your health was improving but slowly and thinking that you are desirous of hearing from the regiment: I will drop you this short note. At any rate my correspondence has been interrupted to a great extent from some cause. Well we are going through the same monotonous routine as when you left excepting fatigue on Posts has become less frequent. There has various changes taken place since you left. Our much respected commander Gen Logan has left to assume command of a corps. He received the Division by Brigades making a few very appropriate farewell remarks. Gen Leggett is now in command of the division. remain the Hero of the war. I notice that still a portion of the Grand Army of the Tennessee are deserving of no small share of the honor under Gen Sherman. They are conscripting a good many citizens that are following the army to avoid the draft as well as make money. Rev Vanatio and Rev Buchanan of the U.P. church missionaries to the Freedmen of the south have each preached to the regiment. Lieut. McDonald is with Co C 78th OVII is in good health and enjoying himself. Lieut Mills remains the same as ever. and Capt Scott is for “The constitution as it was”. I still hear the Col speak of “Daniel in the Lyons Den”. There has several orders been published with regard to enlisting for three years more after the expiration of two years of our present time of service. There is going to be a big effort made to get the 78th into it. We can enlist after the 11th of Jan /64 the date of the organization of the Regt. There will a great many go into it. I have not made my mind up I shall still consider the case. I would prefer going into another organization. If the majority enlist the balance will be assigned to some other Regt to serve their time out. Rest easy as to return to the Reg’t be sure that you have fully recovered. You have the heartfelt sympathy of the Co. As I feel a deep interest in you welfare as well as all good soldiers. I have just heard that you are quite ill which I am sorry to hear. I shall draw to a close hoping that you will recover and that you may again return to the regiment. Give my respects and well wishes to your sister Mattie as well as other members of the family. I remain your friend and comrade with much respect and sincere attachment. TC Starr D. Mc We have seen some very hard times since I left home we have marched over 350 miles in order to join Sherman and assist him in whipping Genl Jo Johnson and capturing Atlanta. Marching has played out and we have took to fighting. We have been skirmishing with the rebs for better than a week one day our lines advanced and we had a tolerable big fight. There was 3 captains out of our regiment and 2 privates wounded and one man killed. That was Clint Starr he was killed almost instantly shot through the breast. He was out in the rifle pits sharp shooting where it was done. It was on the morning of the 15th about 6 oclock. Info provided Mary Kay Frank Armstrong 1-16-15
