"Bill" Coons, 67, Valley Falls, died Sept. 21, 1990, at his home. Mr. Coons was an Army veteran of World War II, having served with the 134th Infantry Regiment under General George S. Patton. He enlisted in the Army Reserve in 1949 in a teaching capacity and later became commandant of the NCO School for the 5047th U.S. Army Reserve School. He retired in 1983. He also was supply technician of the 129th Transport Division from 1978 until he retired in 1985 in Osage City. He had worked for Modern Tractor Co. and was a car salesman for Mercer Chevrolet, both in Valley Falls, and had served on the HUD board at Valley Falls. He was born May 14, 1923, at Valley Falls, the son of Mason and Mabel Lassiter Coons. His parents moved to Michigan when he was quite young, and he remained with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Lassiter at Valley Falls and attended Valley Falls schools. Mr. Coons was a member of First Christian Church, Valley Falls, and was a former deacon and church treasurer several years. He was also a member of Grahem-Herbers Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3084, Valley Falls, Robert Heizer Post No. 198 of the American Legion, Osage City, Association of the U.S. Army in Arlington, Va., and had received the Citizen Soldier Award in 1977. He was married to Ruby Gray Nov. 3, 1940, at Atchison. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Mary Jane Burns, Valley Falls; two sons, Daniel Ray Coons, Arvada, Colo., and William Joseph Coons, Manhattan; a brother, Robert D. Coons, Niles, Mich.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Services were Sept. 24, at Nellis Funeral Home, Valley Falls, with the Rev. Gary Spencer, First Chrisian Church, officiating. Ardith Spencer was the organist and Lee Lassiter soloist. Honorary casket bearers were Jim Koehler, Raymond Mandorin, Ralph Boyer, Tony Hagen, Ron Harper, Richard Malm, E.H.Faunce, Fred Bolz, Harry Joe Evans, and Ted Montgomery. Casket bearers were Frank Green, John Halladay, Jerry Pemberton, Floyd Amon, Ray Griffin, and Charlie Gray. Military graveside services were conducted by Grahem-Herbers VFW Post No. 3084 in Valley Falls Cemetery.
