Sharon C. McFadden enlisted on August 25, 1876 in Co., B, 4th U. S. Cavalry at Chicago, Illinois. He listed his age as 21 and his birth location as Johnson County, Indiana. He was described as 5'9" tall, with fair hair and complexion and hazel eyes. He was discharged August 24, 1881 from the Contonment on the Uncompahgre near Montrose, Colorado. This contonment was later named Fort Crawford. He was discharged at the end of his five years of service, with an "excellent" notation. The military pension form lists his death date as October 18, 1903 in Topeka, Kansas, with the classification of "Indian Wars." His parents and siblings were in Coffey County, Kansas, in 1880. Sharon married Hattie Sharp 6 May 1888 in Franklin County, Kansas. (marriage index) They were l together in the 1895 Kansas State census in the town of Chanute in Neosho County. They were with Ruth, age 5; Ralph, age 3; and Dorothy, age 1. Sharon's brother, John S. McFadden was also with the family. Sharon is recorded as a locomotive engineer and John S., a locomotive fireman. Sharon & Hattie are together in Chanute in 1900, with Ruth, age 10; Ralph, age 8; and Dorothy, age 6. The 1910 census also shows sons Sharon and John H. Sharon is recorded in the Elmwood Cemetery records with a 1903 burial year.
