Briner, of Kansas City, MO, and formerly of Cedar Falls and Waverly, IA, died at age 79 on November 6, 2019 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, KS, following a brave battle against cancer. Sharon Kay Bodecker Briner was born to Grace (Hutchinson) and Lorenz Bodecker in Waverly, IA on February 24, 1940. She graduated from Waverly High School and Wartburg College and worked as a legal secretary and paralegal. In 1981, she graduated from the University of Iowa School of Law and spent most of her professional life as the lead attorney in the Black Hawk County Juvenile Public Defender Office. She felt privileged to advocate tirelessly for hundreds of children who were her clients before retiring in 2007. Sharon married K.D. Briner on August 14, 1960. Together, they raised two daughters and rescued numerous pug dogs. Sharon enjoyed doing cross stich; watching the birds and deer; reading fiction and theology; writing and receiving letters; playing cribbage and canasta; spending time with her family and all their dogs; worshiping and volunteering at Platte Woods UMC in Kansas City; cheering on the Nebraska Cornhuskers; and a good laugh. Although she lived in numerous states over the course of her life, Iowa was always home. Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Grace and Lorenz Bodecker; her infant sons, Christopher and Jonathan; her husband, Karl (K.D.); and her son-in-law, Ed Schaeffer. She is survived by daughter Karla Briner Schaeffer; daughter Kristen Briner Wipperman and husband Gary; granddaughter Anna Bohn and husband Sebastian; grandson Alex Schaeffer; sister Joyce Bodecker Timson and husband Fred and their family; and many friends. Memorial services will be held on Monday, November 11, 2019 at 10:30 am at St. Timothy’s United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa with Pastor Scott Lothe officiating. Burial will be in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly, Iowa at 9:00 am on Monday. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorial donations be made to Platte Woods Methodist Church Kansas City. MO or to your local animal rescue organization. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home of Waverly, Iowa is assisting the Briner family with arrangements.
