Read More	ASHBY, SHERMAN FRANCIS "SHERM" — Sherman Francis Ashby was born to Albert A. Ashby and Gertrude Ferg Ashby on April 12, 1923, at Fairmont. He passed away on December 14, 1984, at Geneva, Fillmore County Hospital, at the age of 61 years, 8 months, and 2 days. He was one of two children in the family. Sherm attended school in Fairmont, where he graduated from high school in 1940. He was a graduate of the Class of 1942 of Kemper Military School. Before going into the military service in 1943, he attended classes at the University of Nebraska and Doane College. Sherm served in the European Theater in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and was awarded the Soldiers Medal. Following his discharge in October, 1945, he attended Nebraska Wesleyan University and Wharton College of Mortuary Science in Chicago, Il. He worked in Lincoln for a short time before returning to Geneva where he became a partner with Robert Kritner in the Kritner-Ashby funeral home. Since 1957, he has been actively engaged in farming, as well as being business manager for Ashby Farms and Drs. Ashby and Ashby. Sherm enjoyed socializing and belonged to many organizations including the Masonic Lodge and Shrine, American legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lions Club, Elks, Fillmore County Grange and I.O.O.F. He was active in the community and served as Fillmore County Civil Defense Director, on the Geneva Planning Commission, as Fillmore county Republican Chairman, as President of the Board of Directors of the Fillmore County Recreation Association, and as a member and past-chief of the Geneva Volunteer Fire Department. He also enjoyed playing golf and watching sports events. Sherm liked people and could strike up a conversation with anyone. There were no strangers to him. But foremost in his feelings were family, home, and old friends. He was always interested and concerned for others. Sherman was married to Kathryn Sloan of Geneva on May 16, 1958, and to them two children were born. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn; daughter, Catherine, and her husband, Richard Hagge, daughter, Carol; brother, Dr. Charles F. Ashby and wife, Jean; and by one grandchild, Nathan Hagge, all of Geneva. Services were conducted Monday, December 17, from the United Methodist Church in Geneva with the Rev. Donald F. Marsh officiating. Mrs. Willard Foster on the organ accompanied Kelly Eich who sang “The Lord’s Prayer.” The congregation sang “Nearer My God to Thee.” Pallbearers were Charles Allgood, Vaughn C. Fulton, Louis Issler, Claiton Lauber, Paul J. O’Connor and Francis D. Rose. Honorary pallbearers were Stanley Allgood, Joe Bixby, Sheldon A. Johnson, Frank McPeck and Hugh Wilkins.
