Sherman LeRoy (Bud) Zea was born May 13, 1927, the son of Edgar Dean and Etta May (Grossman) Zea in Mason City, Iowa. Sherman was baptized and attended the Methodist Church while growing up in Mason City. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 while a junior, was honorably discharged, and returned to Mason City High School, graduating in 1944. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and while stationed at Yokota Air Force Base, Japan, Tech Sgt. Zea was honored as Airman of the Month. Sherman was united in marriage to Maxine Marzen on Nov. 11, 1951, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City. Following an honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1953, Sherman and Maxine spent 18 years farming and raising their four daughters in the Dougherty area. After retiring from farming, they moved to Rockwell where Sherman served on the City Council for many years. Sherman worked as an ag agronomist in the area, retiring from Weiner's Elevator in Cartersville. Sherman loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed attending their sporting events, school functions, birthday parties and all family celebrations. His hobbies included traveling, fishing trips with co-workers and friends, planting flowers, feeding and watching the birds with Maxine in their back yard and reading western novels. Sherman enjoyed spending time with Cory at Don's Auto Shop and with his son-in-law, John Ries, at his shop. Sherman's recent highlights included welcoming home from Iraq celebrations with his grandson, 1st Lt. Christopher Collins, and attending the Barret Jackson Car Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., with John and Mitchell Ries. Sherman was a very devoted husband. He and Maxine celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family in 2001 in Sioux City. Sherman will be missed by all that knew him and cherished memories of his life will be lovingly held. His life was full of simple enjoyments: family and friends, jokes, laughter and watching crops and livestock grow in the Iowa countryside from behind the wheel of his little red truck. Sherman is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Maxine Zea of Rockwell; their children, Susan (Craig) Kundert of Mason City, Debra (Mike) Weese of Hampton, Lynette (John) Ries of Rockwell, and Jackie (Chris) Frenz of Mason City; grandchildren, Matthew and Lauren Kundert of Mason City, Joy (Chris) Bogenrief of Sioux City, Christopher Collins of Hinesville, Ga., Justin and Mitchell Ries of Rockwell, and Kelsey, Isaac, Nicholas and Jessa Frenz of Mason City; step grandchildren, Jason (Bev) Weese of Mason City and Heidi Weese of Clear Lake; great-grandchildren, Blake, Ben and Adeline Bogenrief of Sioux City, step great-grandchildren, Ashley and Emily Weese of Mason City; a brother, Bob (Becky) Zea of Des Moines; many nieces; nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; cousins; brothers and sisters in-law: Ruby Zea of Mason City, Charles (Joyce) Marzen of Marble Rock, Peggy Marzen of Marble Rock, Max (Virginia) Marzen of New Albin, Joan Nettleton of Greene and Charlene (Donald) of Waukegan, Ill.; aunts, Maude Kuzara and Pearl Stevens.
