Sherman S Fletcher of Bridgewater. Those who have never been on top of Bridgewater Hill have missed a great treat and have something to which to look forward. Starting from the Plymouth side of the hill and wending one's way upwards, trees line both sides of the road, forming an archway, making the hottest day seem cool. At the summit of the hill one emerges from the deep foliage coming into an opening, revealing a glorious view of the surrounding countryside, hills and mountains. It is on this road that Sherman S Fletcher lives. Here lived also his father, grandfather and great grandfather. Many years ago Abel Fletcher came to Bridgewater from Westford, Massachusetts and settled just below where Mrs Lydia Guisse makes her summer home. The house is no longer standing, but the house which S S Fletcher's grandfather built is now owned by Mrs Guisse. George Fletcher bought the house now occupied by his son and spent the greater part of his life there. It was in this same attractive white story and one-half farmhouse that Sherman S Fletcher was born October 17, 1865, the younger son of George F and Armina (Currier) Fletcher. Here he and his brother were brought up and attended the little schoolhouse on Bridgewater Hill. Sherman later went to a private school in Meredith for a period of ten weeks and then went one school term to New Hampton where he took the Commercial course. His father was a thrifty farmer and worked his farm to the greatest advantage possible. Sherman liked the farm work and helped during his vacation periods and after school hours. Sherman's brother left home at the age of twenty-one and Sherman, liking the farm life kept on after he had finished his schooling. The Fletcher farm consists of two hundred acres of woodland, pastureland and fertile fields, most of which has been in the Fletcher family for well over one hundred years and of which Mr Fletcher is justly proud. He carries on a large farm, with a fine stock of domestic animals. He raises a large garden every year and has a hardy orchard of apples trees. Many of which he set out himself. Mr Fletcher is a most enterprising man as shown by his well-known quality products of Horseradish and Boiled Cider. He has been raising his own horseradish and preserving it for the past forty-two years. His trade has steadily grown and he sells it throughout New Hampshire, Vermont and the rest of New England. Last year he sold about six thousand bottles, showing to what extent it is appreciated by his many satisfied customers. Likewise is the case with Mr Fletcher's Boiled Cider which he sells in great quantities in New Hampshire and other surrounding states. He makes his own cider in his home made cider press and many years ago he set out Baldwin Apple trees from which makes the cider. Boiled Cider is used in cooking in making Mince Meat and Apple Sauce. Mr Fletcher's products are known to residents throughout this section and their popularity is well deserved. Sherman Fletcher cared for his parents in their old age and after their deaths he kept on with the farm, making it his home and carrying it on as the fourth generation in the Fletcher family on Bridgewater Hill. October 1, 1891, he married Miss Josephine H Clement, also of Bridgewater, and they are the parents of one son, Cyrus C, who makes his home with his parents. Mr Fletcher holds a respected position with his fellow citizens as is manifest in his office of public trust. He is a member of the school board, where he has served for the past thirty years to the best of his knowledge and experience and is its chairman. He is a Trustee of Trust Funds which office he has held for twenty years and he has served as a Supervisor of the Checklist for twenty years. He has been Town Treasurer for twenty-nine years, the duties of which he has dispensed with great efficiency. Mr Fletcher is the oldest living representative of the Fletcher family which is probably the oldest family in this section of Bridgewater and for four generations has made its home on the summit of Bridgewater hill. As his great grandfather, Abel, established the fine Fletcher reputation for honesty and sincerity, so Sherman, and his son Cyrus, of the fifth generation are loyally and faithfully carrying it on. >The Plymouth Record, September, 2, 1933, Front Page.
