Description	:	Shirley died shortly before her sixth birthday from Nephritis, a kidney disease that was untreatable in the 1950's. At that time, doctors thought watermelon juice was her only hope. Jars of juice were donated and flown into the Decorah Airport by the Red Cross but it was of little help. Shirley passed away leaving behind her parents, Donald and Anna Grace DeCou, her younger brother David and her cat Squeaky.
