Wolfe Funeral Home of Villisca in charge of arrangements. Shirley Ann (Guss) Fidler was born September 28, 1934 in Hacklebarney, Iowa; a daughter to Glenn William Guss and Eula Irene (Mortiz) Guss. She graduated from Nodaway High School in 1952 as the class salutatorian. Shirley married her sweetheart, Jird Malvin Fidler, on October 28, 1954 at the Naval Air Station - Navy Chapel in North Island, California. Four daughters were born to this union: Cheryl, in Iowa; Pamela, in New Mexico; Trina, in New Mexico; and Janeen, in California. In spite of the difficulties inherent with raising a family while her husband was, at times, called away for months at a time in service to our country, she was the model of a supportive military wife and a superlative mother to her girls, all of whom credit her for being both their rock and their inspiration. Shirley passed away February 18, 2014 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 52 years, Jird, sisters, Roma Ingersol and June Balog, and sister-in-law Wendy Guss. Shirley loved to paint and was a gifted artist. A talented seamstress, she even delved into tailoring to make suits for Jird. She shared her passions with all her daughters and encouraged their creative gifts as well. She was a marathon thrift store shopper, and auction attendee. The thrill of the hunt for a bargain was something she pursued with gusto and a devilish grin and consequently, all her family's homes benefited from her generosity and discerning eye. She liked to play Bingo and was a regular in Nodaway on Friday nights. All three generations of her descendants, from her eldest daughter to the youngest great grandson, where crazy about her, because most of all, Shirley was a supportive, loving, caring confidant and friend to her entire family. Surviving Shirley are her daughters: Cheryl and soulmate Ronald Classen of Villisca, Pamela Cass of Red Oak , Trina Johnson and husband Tracy of rural Corning, Janeen Hall and husband Vernon of Villisca; grandchildren: Sara Benton of the West Coast , Abigail Shipp and husband, Thomas of Red Oak , Benjamin Jird Cass of California , Sonja Govig and husband Travis of Villisca , Katie Wagaman and husband Kaleb of Red Oak , Nichole O'Briant of Villisca, Jesse O'Briant and wife Crystal of Villisca , Jeremiah Burton of Chillicothe, Missouri, and Kirstin Hall of Villisca; great grandchildren: Josiah, Jonah, Annie, Piper Ann, Maxamas, Malakeye , Montgomry, Drake, Dakota Jird, , Emma and two more babies on the way; siblings: Ronald (Joanne) Guss of Virginia, Merwin (Wanda) Guss of Florida, Janet Echternach of Clarinda, Wayne Guss of Utah, Sandra (Gail) Kinser of Villisca and Joan (Larry) Purdue of Griswold, and many, many nieces, nephews, and friends.
