Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Aurora United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ron Harris will officiate. Interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Shirley Ann Lindstrom Babel, the daughter of Charles Emil and Loretta (Cunningham) Lindstrom, was born in a farm house near Sacramento, Neb., on Oct. 4, 1926, and passed away at Aurora, Neb., on Jan. 14, 2015, at the age of 88. Shirley grew up in the Holdrege area and graduated from Holdrege High School Class of 1945. One of her first jobs was working at the dime store for 10¢ an hour. On Oct. 28, 1951, she was united in marriage to Marvin Emil Babel at Holdrege. Shirley stayed at home to raise their three children: Larry, Marla and Cheryl. They moved to Chicago for one year and then returned to Nebraska, residing in Wood River for three years and Grand Island for five years. Shirley sold AVON and worked at Green Stamp while in Grand Island. On April 19, 1961, they moved to Aurora. In Aurora, Shirley worked as secretary for John Stuchlik on the Town Square, then for Harold Powell and Monsanto. Shirley also did the books for Marv’s Engine & Machine Shop for 30 years. Marvin passed away on June 5, 1991. Shirley was an active member of the Aurora United Methodist Church and Dorcas Circle. Shirley was working as church secretary when the E.U.B. Church united with the Methodist Church under Merwyn Davidson. Shirley volunteered to help make weekly visits to those members in their homes. Shirley was a member of the TOPS Women’s Club and volunteered at the Plainsman Museum. Every year she attended the Holdrege Alumni Banquets and activities, which usually fell on her birthday. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant brother, Peter; and a sister, Oneita Myers. Those who remain to cherish her memory are her three children, Larry (Jana) Babel of Casa Grande, Ariz., Marla Babel of Alda and Cheryl (Bob) Mills of Aurora; six grandchildren, Josh (Jenn) Babel of Arizona, Cory Babel of Arizona, Tara (Russ) Miller of Phillips, Molly (Russel) Jacobitz of Grand Island, Bowen Mills of York and Luke (Amanda) Mills of Omaha; and 11 great-grandchildren.
