Lathrop Rescues Bodies By Edna Triplett WHITE SALMON (Special) - A double tragedy came to White Salmon late Sunday afternoon when the White Salmon River claimed two lives, and narrowly missed taking a third, as Shirley Thomas, 31, and Warren Downey, 33, were drowned a quarter of a mile below Husum when their rubber boat capsized after striking a rock. They had been attempting to shoot the rapids of the river. Delbert Krenz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Krenz, of White Salmon, the third member of the party, clung to the boat, managing to make his way to shore, and to summon help. Fire departments from both White Salmon and Bingen quickly arrived at the scene to aid in the rescue attempt. The bodies were located within 10 feet of each other, approximately one mile below the scene of the accident. Dr. T.G. Lathrop, tying a rope around his waist, dove into some eight feet of water, and brought the bodies to shore. They were pronounced dead by Dr. Lathrop immediately thereafter. The trio's intention had been to follow the course of the river from Husum to Northwestern Lake. They began their hazardous journey at the Husum Bridge, seven miles north of White Salmon, and had traveled about a quarter of a mile before misfortune overtook them. The swift current of the river swept the boat against a rock in mid-stream, throwing the occupants overboard. Warren Downey and Shirley Thomas were caught in the treacherous currents and carried downstream, while Krenz was able to save himself. Mrs. Thomas is survived by two daughters, Dolores, 10, and Karen, 6. Warren Downey is survived by two daughters. The bodies were removed to the Gardner Funeral Home. Funeral services were held for Mrs. Thomas at 1:30 Wednesday, April 13th, from the Gardner Home. Services for Warren Downey will be held from the Henessey Funeral home in Portland.
