Description	:	Shirley Lawton, 84, of Iowa Falls, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls. Memorial services were held Feb. 21 at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls was charge of the arrangements. Read More	Shirley Lawton, 84, of Iowa Falls, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls. Memorial services were held Feb. 21 at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls was charge of the arrangements. Shirley Lawton was born on Feb. 7, 1925, in Iowa Falls, the daughter of Harold and Susan (Wuebben) Stringer. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1943. On March 19, 1944, Shirley was united in marriage to Harold N. Lawton of Alden. Shirley directed the Presbyterian Church Choir at Rolfe for 13 years while residing in that community. In 1963, the family moved to Creston. Mrs. Lawton became district chairman of the Moingona Girl Scout Council of Des Moines. She was secretary to the vice principal of Creston High School, Creston, for many years. Shirley and Bud moved to Atlantic in 1968. Shirley became secretary to the vice principal and athletic director at Atlantic High School. Shirley was president of the Atlantic Iowa Golf and Country Club Womens Association. She directed the Iowa Womens Golf Association tournament Forever 39 held in Atlantic. Mrs. Lawton retired as Cass County judge in Atlantic in 1984 after serving in that capacity for 5-1/2 years. She received the Freedom Foundation Award in 1984 as she had developed an Intervention Program as judge, regarding juveniles charged as minors in possession of beer. She developed this program after eight high school boys died in a car accident and beer was found in their car. This program went into effect in several locations in Iowa. Following retirement, she moved to Fairfield Bay, Ark., with her husband, Bud. She was a member of the Fairfield Bay Indian Hills Golf Club, Fairfield Bay Log Cabin Museum, United States Golf Association and the Fairfield Bay Animal Protection League where she volunteered. Survivors include her husband, two daughters, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Mrs. Lawton was preceded in death by her parents. [Contributed by Robert Fahey.]
