Description	:	Harold Nelson “Bud” Lawton, 93, passed peacefully to heaven on Tuesday, July 19, 2016. At the time of his passing, he was with his two daughters, Susan and Katherine. A Celebration Life for “Bud” will be Monday, August 1st at 2:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 31st from 2:00 to 4:00 at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls. “Bud” was born April 13, 1923 on a farm northeast of Alden, Iowa. He was the son of Ellen and Fred Lawton. “Bud” attended eight years of country school at Highland District #8. He completed four years at Alden High School and graduated in 1940. “Bud” and Shirley J. Stringer of Iowa Falls were married on March 19, 1944. At that time “Bud” was employed by the Railway Express Agency in Ames, Iowa. In 1949, he was hired to work for Central States Electric Co. in Iowa Falls which eventually became Iowa Electric Light and Power of the state of Iowa. After working for this company for 36 years in Rolfe, Creston, and Atlantic,“Bud” and Shirley retired and moved to Fairfield Bay, Arkansas where they played golf almost every day. In 2004, they moved back to Iowa Falls where they could be closer to family. Harold was always active in the communities where they lived. He served as President and board member in many of the community clubs. Because he loved golf so much, he especially loved being on the board of the many golf courses he belonged too. He was in Boy Scouts for 20 years and served as scout leader, explorer advisor and district finance chairman. He trained and took troops to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and also to participate in various outings in Canada and throughout Iowa. He was a 63-year member of the Masonic Lodge and received his 50 year pin in Masonry in 1999 and was still an active member in the Iowa Falls chapter. “Bud” was a 32nd degree Mason, a past member of the Shrine club in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas and also, the Scimitar Shrine Temple of Little Rock, Arkansas. He was a member of the Lions Club and Rotary Club for 39 years. The Lions club presented “Bud” The Howard Dalstrom District Service Award and The Melvin Jones Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Service. In 2012, he was especially honored to receive the Iowa Citizen of Character Award. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls. More importantly, “Bud” loved his work. There were very few days he didn’t want to go to work. His greatest thrill was to see an employee advance within the company. He loved this quote from Muhammed Ali: “He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.” This is how he lived and what he believed in. His greatest love was his family and then sports, especially, golf and fishing. He wrote in his notebook that his "proudest moment was marrying Shirley and walking his daughters down the aisle at their weddings.” Surviving are two daughters; Susan Stock of Webster City, Iowa and Katherine Van Horn (Steve) of Algonquin, Illinois. Also grandchildren, David Stock and great grandsons, Preston and Pierce of Waukee, Iowa; Michael Stock (Michelle) and great granddaughters Emma and Ashleigh of Fairfax, Va.; Matthew Stock (Karol) and great granddaughter Alice Jayne of Des Moines; Kristofer Van Horn (Jaime) and great granddaughters Chloe Lawton, Sadie and great grandson Landon of Pingree Grove, Illinois; Sigourney Guilford (Troy) and great granddaughters Remy and Tatum of Bend, Oregon; many nieces and nephews and special friend, Lannie Barsness.
