Description	:	The first child born to David and Louisa Rouls Lilly was a son and he was named Shirley Joseph Lilly. He was born in Tipton Co. Indiana on 3 Jan 1880. The family lived near his grandparents, who were Green and Sarah Eliza Wright Lilly and Will Henry and Phoebe Lucreatia Dill Rouls. Kansas, where they homesteaded. They lived there... Read More	The first child born to David and Louisa Rouls Lilly was a son and he was named Shirley Joseph Lilly. He was born in Tipton Co. Indiana on 3 Jan 1880. The family lived near his grandparents, who were Green and Sarah Eliza Wright Lilly and Will Henry and Phoebe Lucreatia Dill Rouls. Phoebe Rouls had died five years before Shirley was born so he never knew her. When Shirl, as they called him, was about six years old, David and Louisa decided to move to Decatur Co. Kansas, where they homesteaded. They lived there a few years and then because of unfavorable weather and hard times they moved back to Tipton Co., IN. It is not known how much schooling Shirl had, but he probably went through the sixth grade as he could read very well, was a good penman and was good at figures. He grew up on a farm and did the things a normal boy does. His father was a carpenter and Shirl took up that occupation too. When Shirl was 17 he decided to join the army as the Spanish American war was going on at that time. He spent time in Cuba, China and the Phillipine Islands. While in the army, he contracted dysentery and when he came home he only weighed 98 pounds. He was very thin as he was about 5 feet 10 inches tall and was rather large boned. But back home again his mother saw to it that he ate well and returned to his normal weight. When he returned home, he met Bertha Louisa Puterbaugh whose family was living just across the road from the Lilly family and, after a courtship of a few months, they decided to spend their lives together. They were married on 6 Dec. 1903.
