Description	:	Shubal Jefferson Fowler Way was the tenth child of Benjamin Way and Celia Caroline Nelson in a familiy that included fifteen children. Shubal's older brother was James O'Kelly Way. After James died, Shubal married his brother's widow, Anna Semira (Picket)Way, on May 19th, 1869 at Emporia, Lyon County, Kansas. Read More	Shubal Jefferson Fowler Way was the tenth child of Benjamin Way and Celia Caroline Nelson in a familiy that included fifteen children. Shubal's older brother was James O'Kelly Way. After James died, Shubal married his brother's widow, Anna Semira (Picket)Way, on May 19th, 1869 at Emporia, Lyon County, Kansas. Shubal and Anna had three children together: Taylor Colfax Way, John Pickett Way, and Hubert Tunis Way. During the Civil War, Shubal served with the 14th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry, Company H, and in the 7th Illinois Cavalry, Company E. He was disabled by a gunshot wound he suffered in Mississippi on 16 Sep 1862. His left side had partial paralysis of his right arm. His files show several drawings of where the ball entered left side of his back at the shoulders and came out on the right side of his back at the shoulders, both places in muscles covering the scapula. In Shubal's account, he related, "On 18th day of September 1862 was badly Shot across Shoulders and Spine. had bad care of erysipelas in wound and this and the cases already named have given me a troublesome back - So much So that being a farmer I have not been able to do a dys ploughing in 10 years." In that account, he went to show how little he had been compensated: 1880 $2 per month 1883 $4 per month 1884 $6 per month Further, he had been given no increase since, and the letter was dated 11 Jan 1890. It helps to understand that a dollar went a lot further than in modern times, but it still was a pittance considering his very serious wounds. In 1880, there was a mark for Shubal in the column for "maimed, Crippled, bedridden or otherwise disabled." A death notice from the "Council Grove Republican," Friday, 9 March 1900 reads as follows: W. J. Way [sic], of Four Mile, died Tuesday morning. Mr. Way has been ailing most all winter. He was an old settler of this county and was well and favorably known. His remains were interred in the Four Mile cemetary [sic] Wednesday morning. The following is a news story from "The Courier Guard," 9 March 1900: Death of S. J. Way After a lingering illness, S. J. Way of Four Mile died at his home last Tuesday morning. Early last fall he was taken with what seemed to be an attack of la grip. Complications set in and heart trouble developed which proved fatal. The deceased was of wide acquaintance, of sterling character, and true nobility. Few men stand for more effective good in a community than he did. He was one of the early settlers and one of the well known men throughout this and Lyon county. Funeral serviced were held from the home Wednesday. In common with many friends here we extend sympathies to the bereaved relatives.
