Sidney was born on March 1, 1918 at Troy, South Dakota to Edward and Mary (Stormo) Brekke. He attended school in Hamlin County, South Dakota and Watertown, South Dakota; graduating in 1936. Starting as a youth, Sidney worked for eleven years at the Watertown Public Opinion. He joined the US Navy on November 10, 1941. He served in WWII on the USS Cummings, Pacific Fleet as a Second Class Petty Officer. Sidney married Viola Fordyce on February 9, 1947 at Hayti, South Dakota with Rev. Gilford Helgeson officiating. The couple farmed in Hamlin County, South Dakota until 1985. They bought a home in Watertown, South Dakota in 1987. Sidney was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church where he held many council positions over the years. He also was a member of Golden K, VFW Post #750, and the Watertown Senior Citizens. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, woodworking, fishing, making canes for many friends and family, gardening, and retelling stories of his life. He is survived by his wife, Viola of Watertown; four children: Connie Kranz of Watertown, South Dakota, Dean and his wife, Sylvia Brekke of Phoenix, Arizona, Marsha and her husband, Chris Asbury of Casper, Wyoming, and Monica and her husband, Mike Lemme of Tucson, Arizona; one brother, Maurice and his wife, Ruth Brekke of Watertown, South Dakota; ten grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. Sidney was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; two sisters; and one son-in-law, Gary Kranz. Donations in memory of Sidney may be made to UC Davis Mind Institute, Fragile X Donation, 2825 50th St., Sacramento, California 95817.
