She is survived by her four grandchildren: Debby and Keith Beartusk of Billings and their children, Tahnee and Mike Barnes of Butte; Miki and Bill Lloyd and children Brent and Kaci of Helena; Wendy and Monty Willson of Great Falls and their children, Shirley Willson of Atlanta, Ga., Leroy Willson of Missoula and Peter Willson of Reston, Va.; Heidi and Edd McClain of Atlanta, Ga., and their daughter, Ramona McClain of Atlanta; and Mark Rye Beals of Colstrip. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews who were an integral part of her life. Signe was preceded in death by her parents; her only child, Shirley Rye Beals, and son-in-law Burdette Beals; her husband of 52 years; and her 11 sisters and brothers. Signe was born Oct. 3, 1906, in Seim, S.D., the daughter of Emma Myhren and Christian Skretteberg, both born in Norway. They had homesteads in South Dakota and Montana and also lived in Fort Steele, British Columbia, before they finally settled in the Rosebud Creek area near Colstrip, Mont., where Signe attended schools. She attended high school in Forsyth, Mont., and was on the basketball team and in the "G" Glee Club. On June 2, 1928, Signe married Obert Rye in Glendive, Mont., and they lived in Medora, N.D., Starbuck, Minn., and at various construction jobs around the United States. In 1935, Foley Brothers Co. moved Signe and Obert and their only child, Shirley Yvonne Rye, to Colstrip. Throughout the years, Signe held many roles in the development of the Colstrip community with her tireless dedication to helping others at all times. She was a charming and gracious lady who always had a smile and cheerful word for each of us at the moment we needed it most. After the death of her daughter and son-in-law in 1956, Signe and Obert became the guardians of their four grandchildren, whom they raised with love. They became the "best" parents to these children by taking on this great responsibility, giving out credit and always finding solutions to problems with grace and inspiration. They taught them to speak kindly, act fairly, endure patiently and enjoy life by their examples. Their lifetime commitment to excellence was modestly acknowledged. Her cheerful and supportive involvement in the community was demonstrated in numerous activities, including being a charter member and board director of Colstrip Community Church, where she belonged to the Evening Church Circle and Afternoon Circle, and was a Sunday school teacher. She also was a Girl Scout and 4-H leader, served as election judge at the polls, worked Heart Fund drives, and belonged to the Red Cross and the Colstrip Bridge Club. Her numerous accomplishments and good deeds were recognized by many awards, including Princess of Rosebud County, 1924; Mother of the Year for Rosebud County, 1969; Yard of the Month by Colstrip Garden Club, and Grand Marshal of Colstrip Days Parade.
