Note: The original death notices/obituaries for both Silas and his wife Marinda and published in the Fairfield Daily Journal gave the family surname as "Cowan". The headstone uses "Cowen", however as does the Fairfield Ledger obituary. The 1957 obituary for their daughter Gertude Collins gives her maiden name as "Cowen". COWAN DIED THIS MORNING S. C. Cowan (sic) passed away at seven o'clock this morning at the home of his son J. S. Cowan northwest of the city. Mr. Cowan has been ill for several weeks and his death followed a stroke of paralysis. Besides the widow and son, J. S. Cowan, a daughter, Mrs. Dennis Collins survies (sic). No arrangements for the funeral have been made further than that it will be held some time Monday. ----------------------- Fairfield Ledger Wednesday August 20, 1913 Pg. 6 Col. 2 & 3 Was Soldier of Civil War. Silas C. Cowen, who died at the home of his son, James S. Cowen, in this city Saturday morning, was a soldier of the Civil war, a member of Company F. Twenty-second Pennsylvania cavalry. He was born in Greene county, Penn., September 20th, 1841, and grew to manhood there. He came to this county in 1866, remained here for three years and then returned to his native state, where he was married to Marinda Montgomery, who survives him. They were the parents of four children, two of whom are living - the son in this city and a daughter, Mrs. D. C. Collins, at Los Angeles, Cal. Mr. Cowen had been a member of the Christian church for almost a quarter of a century. He was a man of industrious habits and undoubted integrity. The body was interred Monday afternoon, Rev. R. H. Polly, pastor of the Christian church, having charge of the funeral service. Geo. Strong post, G. A. R., paid the last sad tribute to its deceased brother.
