Note: Certain obituaries for both Silas and his wife Marinda published in the Fairfield Ledger-Journal gave the family surname as "Cowan". The headstone uses "Cowen", however, as does the Fairfield Tribune obituary. The 1957 obituary for their daughter Gertude Collins gives her maiden name as "Cowen". Such phonetic variations are common - will use the "Cowen" surname spelling per the headstone inscription. ---------------------- Fairfield Ledger-Journal Friday June 17, 1921 Pg. 1 Col. 7 MRS. S. W. COWAN DIED YESTERDAY (sic. Silas C. Cowen) Mrs. S. W. Cowan (sic) passed away last evening at the home of her daughter Mrs. D. C. Collins. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Collins home on Iowa avenue. ------------------------ Fairfield Tribune' Thursday June 23, 1921 Pg. 12 Col. 2 DEATHS COWEN, Mrs. Marinda - following many years of invalidism, Mrs. Marinda Cowen died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. C. Collins, Thursday, June 16. Her death was hastened by a severe fall which she sustained some weeks ago. Mrs. Cowen was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Montgomery and was born in Waynesburg, Penn., January 29, 1840, one of a family of twelve children. She was united in marriage to Silas C. Cowen in 1870 and the couple came to Iowa that same year. After a short residence in Fairfield they moved to Packwood, where they resided for twenty-five years, then moving again to Fairfield. Mr. Cowen died August 16, 1913, and Mrs. Cowen suffered failing health from that time. Mrs. Cowen was the mother of four children, two of whom are living, Mrs. D. C. Collins of Fairfield, and James S. Cowen of Packwood. Mrs. Cowen early in life united with the Baptist church, later transferring her affiliations to the Christian church. She was greatly devoted to religious work and was an ardent worker in the church until her health failed. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Polly, of the Christian church, at the D. C. Collins home last Saturday. Burial was made in Evergreen cemetery.
