Silas Stewart Shoaff was born in Andrew, Iowa, June 14, 1859, and died at his home in Oxford, October 28, 1919. He was married to Miss Addie Cartte of Delmar, July 2, 1890, who is left to mourn his loss. One daughter, Bernice Soenksen of Oxford Jct., and one son, Earl Shoaff of Lost Nation and one granddaughter, Edna Shoaff, also survive him, besides four sisters, Mrs. Nina Merritt of Maquoketa, Mrs. Viola Black of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Lottie Wheeler of Stickney, South Dakota and Miss Retta at home and three brothers, J. C. Shoaff of Maquoketa, L. T. Shoaff of Pratt, Kan., and Fred at home, his father and mother having preceded him many years ago. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Dilame of Olin at the home on Thursday and burial in the Calamus cemetery. Many near relatives were not able to attend on account of bad roads. Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Black from Cedar Rapids, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Shoaff of Maquoketa, Mr. A. L. Davis of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Hattie Davis and Mrs. Nellie Harrington of Delmar. All was done that loving hands and medical attention could do but it was not to be and he was called at seven o'clock Tuesday evening to answer the final summons in death. He had been a patient sufferer for a year and was taken to Minnesota for his health but to no avail for he passed away five days after reaching home. Mr. Shoaff was a blacksmith by trade, having followed the trade many years.
