Description	:	Silas W. Munn was the son of John William Munn Sr. and his third wife, Phebe A. Homan. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, with Company B, 24th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He was mustered out 17 July 1865, and returned to Iowa where he married Mary Ann Sanely sometime around 1870. Silas and Mary Ann had five children: John S. A note about Silas' date of birth: Census schedules before 1900 all reflect a birth year of 1848 (taking into account his December birthday), and his father's 1897 obituary states unequivocally that Silas was born in 1848. His military record, however, contains an 1841 date, no doubt adding a few years to cover the fact he was less than 16 years old when he enlisted. The 1900 census records his birth date as December 1847 (which would, incidentally, have put him just over the age of 16 when he enlisted). Then subsequent census schedules reflect an 1846 year of birth, as does his gravestone. Lacking any overwhelming evidence to the contrary, it would seem the 1848 year most likely.
