On Oct. 21, 1899, he was married to Mary Elizabeth Brenneman, who died Nov 25, 1961. On Oct. 21, 1899, he was married to Mary Elizabeth Brenneman, who died Nov 25, 1961. His entire life was spent in Allen Co., Ohio, with the exception of three years (1902-1905) in La Junta, Colorado, where his son Lewis was born. He was a farmer for 40 years and a mail carrier for 30 years before he retired. When he began as a mail carrier in 1916, it was with a horse and buggy. He enjoyed the work and the people he met along the way. He loved to carve canes out of ash saplings he dug up in his woods. He peeled the bark to expose the inner wood, and used the gnarled roots as the handle. He gave away many of the canes he made to friends and family members; one went to the country of Holland with a neice's daughter who lived there. He enjoyed singing, and sang with the church choir and a male chorus until he was 85 years old. Surviving are 2 daughters (Amanda - Mrs. Richard Kerman, and Martha Swartz), 8 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one daughter (Una Irene Hoover, Apr. 15, 1971), one son (Lewis Isaac Stemen, Feb. 22, 1980), one grandchild, one great-grandchild, one great-great-grandchild, 3 brothers and 5 sisters. He was a member of Salem Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held Feb. 28, in charge of Larry Rohrer; interment in Salem Cemetery.
