Simon Hughes died at his home in Marion Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, on June 3, 1895. He was buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, in Stanton Township in Plymouth County. He was an honest, upright man and a devout Catholic. He was born in the Parish of Kingscourt, County Cavan, Ireland, in 1807, and was about 88 years old. He was married in Kingscourt to Margaret Boyle. They had three children while living in Ireland, but their son Patrick and their daughter Margaret Hughes died there, leaving only James to travel with his parents to the United States in 1849. Their daughter Catherine was born in New York in 1850 and their son, "Simon" T. P. Simon was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1854. Simon Hughes and his family moved to Iowa in 1854 and settled on a small farm in Otter Creek Township, Jackson County, where his wife, Margaret Hughes, died on October 21, 1866. The location of her grave is unknown. Around 1882, Simon Hughes moved to Plymouth County with his daughter Catherine and son, "Simon" T. Phillip Simon. His son James had moved to Plymouth County in 1873. Simon Hughes was survived by: James of Stanton township in Plymouth County, T. P. Simon on the homestead in Marion Township, and Mrs. Catherine Dalton of Marcus, Cherokee County, Iowa. "Simon" T. P. Simon Hughes was living in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada when his brother James passed away in 1914. No further information is currently known about T. P. Simon Hughes. When Simon Hughes' niece Mary Lynch immigrated from Ireland to the United States in 1867, he welcomed her to his family's home in Jackson County, Iowa. Mary Lynch married Peter Dunn around 1877 and the graves of two of their sons, Frank Dunn and John Dunn, are also in St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery. Another son, Phillip Dunn, is buried in Calvary cemetery in Sioux City.
