Description	:	Simon Peter Miller, son of Peter and Mary Miller, was born in Westmoreland county, Pa., Feb. 10, 1848, and departed this life at his home in Bonaparte Monday noon, April 8, 1946, aged 98 years and 2 months. Read More	Simon Peter Miller, son of Peter and Mary Miller, was born in Westmoreland county, Pa., Feb. 10, 1848, and departed this life at his home in Bonaparte Monday noon, April 8, 1946, aged 98 years and 2 months. Mr. Miller was one of a family of 12 children, six boys and six girls. He outlived all his brothers and sisters, although an older sister, Henrietta C. Lydolph, who lived north of Bonaparte and who died July 22, 1941, had attained the age of 95 years and 8 months. In 1854 his parents, with their 12 children, left Westmoreland Co., Pa., traveling by steamboat down the Ohio river into the Mississippi and then to Keokuk. From there they moved their belongings by team and wagon to Van Buren county, Iowa, and settled in Bonaparte township, north of town. October 11, 1874, Simon P. Miller was united in marriage with Miss Ellen Ora Watts, who was also a pioneer family of Bonaparte township. They went to housekeeping on the old Watts farm two miles southwest of Bonaparte. After several years on the farm they moved to town, where Mr. Miller operated a butcher shop and grocery store. They lived for a while on a farm north of Bonaparte, then returned to town, bought a home, and he continued in the butcher shop and grocery business. With the exception of a year in Nebraska and Montana, his whole life after he was seven years old, was spent in or near Bonaparte. He liked gardening, and when he no longer felt able to carry on an active business life, he turned to truck farming. It is only in the last few years that he had given up his outdoor activities and gone to live with his granddaughter, Mary Florence Derr in her home in Bonaparte, where he has had every care and comfort to make his decling years enjoyable. Mr. and Mrs. Miller were living in Chicago, Effie, who died at the age of seven years, and Lottie May, who became Mrs. Clark Derr, died March 6, 1937. The wife and mother died Feb. 6, 1941. Simon had three brothers in the Civil War, and he was so eager to enlist that at age of 14 he ran away from home three times and tried to join the army, but met with disappointment, as he was sent home each time. He was an industrious citizen, who enjoyed his friends and was liked by everyone. During these last years he amused himself by playing solitaire, listening to the radio and reading newspapers and magazines. He was mentally alert to the last hour of his life. Mr. Miller was a charger member of the Modern Woodman of America Camp No. 1949. A few years ago he received a memento in recognition of 50 years of membership. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 73, and was raised to 32nd degree Mason. He took great pleasure in his lodge affiliations. Those of his immediate family who are left to mourn are his son, Carl, of Chicago, and three grandchildren, Dr. Miller Derr of Maitland, Mo., Mary Florence Derr of Bonaparte and Earl Miller of Chicago. Also two great-grandchildren, John and Carole Miller of Chicago. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Treverton Warren in Bonaparte Presbyterian church.
