Description	:	Sjoird enlisted in the U.S. Army in Marion County, IA., and served in the Civil War as a member of Company G, 33rd Iowa Regiment. Sjoird (pronounced Shourd) enlisted before he was of age and his father had to sign for him. He served 3 years, till the end of the war. He was at various places in the south, Little Rock and New Orleans were among the places he mentioned. They walked most of the way. Read More	Sjoird enlisted in the U.S. Army in Marion County, IA., and served in the Civil War as a member of Company G, 33rd Iowa Regiment. Sjoird (pronounced Shourd) enlisted before he was of age and his father had to sign for him. He served 3 years, till the end of the war. He was at various places in the south, Little Rock and New Orleans were among the places he mentioned. They walked most of the way. He was on a steam boat where he fell through an open hatch and had his side badly scalded on a steam pipe. When he retired from farming and applied for a pension, he received $75.00 a month. His musket as he called it is in a case at the Floyd Legion Post in Alton, IA. of which he was an honorary member. Sjoird moved to Sioux County, IA and settled in a sod house on 80 acres of land north of Alton, IA. As lumber become more available he built a small house on his land and added on as the family increased. He would leave home at 3 A.M. and drive to Lemars with wheat to be ground and return late at night with the flour. His farm is located 5 miles north of Alton, IA. On 25 Jun 1870 he settled the SE 1/4 of section 14 in Township No. 95 of Range No. 44 on which he built a 12 by 30 house with two floors, five doors and five windows. He also made the following improvements; a stable, dug 2 wells and built a grainary. The paper states he was a citizen of the USA and had a wife and one child. It was dated the 16 Dec 1875, and states that he has plowed and cultivated about 76 acres of land. Another paper shows a receipt of $4.00 which Sjoird paid the government for compensation on above land. Sjoird had blue eyes and light colored hair and complexion and according to the Army records he stood 5 feet 4 inches tall at 20 years of age and weighed 145 pounds. Sjoird's pension papers say that he was living in Pella, IA when he was discharged and the year was 1872 and then moved to Sioux County and has lived there since 1872. His death certificate state that he retired from farming in March 1912 and that he died at 7 p.m.
