Staunton Spectator March 24, 1868 For the Spectator Crab Bottom, Highland County, Va. March 20, 1868 To the Editor of the Spectator: One of the most brutal and unprovoked murders was committed on yesterday in this immediate neighborhood, that it ever was my painful, duty to hear of amongst our peaceful citizens. A man, who hails from Barbour county, West Virginia, by the name of Nathaniel Atchison, (more commonly known by the name of Nat Atchison,) walked into the field where Mr. Solomon Nicholas was plowing, and there deliberately shot him, inflicting three wounds from which he (Nicholas) died almost instantly. Mr. Nicholas was an humble, inoffensive man, though a most estimable citizen. This occurrence has thrown our hitherto peaceful neighborhood into wild excitement, and if Nat Atchison could be apprehended, whilst the excitement is up, he certainly would be lynched. But he took to the mountains, and will likely try to make his escape. I hope the good and orderly citizens everywhere will be on the lookout, and apprehend the murderer so that he may be brought to merited punishment. Atchison is a small man, about five feet six or seven inches; dark complexion, dark hair and beard. He had a revolving rifle when he committed the murder. I have written this in great haste, and under Very great excitement. Think I had better ask you to revise it, or make necessary corrections to make it read with harmony. My object is to get him in the papers, so that good and order loving citizens everywhere may be on the alert, and that he may be apprehended if possible. Very truly, your friend. P. S. —The people here would, I think, give a reward for his apprehension. Staunton Spectator May 19, 1868 John B. Rutherford, indicted at the last term of the Circuit Court for being accessory to the murder of Sol. Nicholas, gave himself up to the authorities, and was tried before Justices Trimble, Bird and Geo. Eagle, and was acquitted. Atchison, the murderer, is still at large, and nothing definite as to his whereabouts can be learned.
