Description	:	Solomon Steel was born Sept. 3, 1811, in Huntingdon county, Pa., and died February 9, 1896, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. D.F. Bickel, at Giard, of old age and its infirmities. The subject of this sketch came to Iowa in 1856 and opened a place for the accommodation of the traveling public between Giard and McGregor, known as Steel's Tavern which he conducted for many years. Read More	Solomon Steel was born Sept. 3, 1811, in Huntingdon county, Pa., and died February 9, 1896, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. D.F. Bickel, at Giard, of old age and its infirmities. The subject of this sketch came to Iowa in 1856 and opened a place for the accommodation of the traveling public between Giard and McGregor, known as Steel's Tavern which he conducted for many years. His life since, with the exception of three years residence at Storm Lake, Ia., and Madison, S.D., has been spent in the vicinity of Giard. In 1880 Grandpa and Grandma Steel, as they were familiarly called, made their home with their daughter, Mrs. D.F. Bickel, from which home Grandma Steel went to the Great Beyond six years ago. Besides Mrs. Bickel, two sons, another daughter and numerous grand and great-grandchildren survive to mourn their loss. The funeral services were held at the residence Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 2:30 pm, Rev. W.F. Schlunge officiating, the remains were then interred in the Giard cemetery. Thus has one more of Clayton county's respected pioneers gone to that land whence none return to tell their discoveries. Elkader Register February 14, 1896 page 5
