Description	:	John Crouse received a telegram on Monday from the coroner of Clinton County that Mrs. Adolph Max and two children were dead. Mrs. Max was a daughter of Mr. Crouse. The evening papers of Monday gave the first definite news: LYONS, Aug 13 — Mrs. Adolph Max and two children aged 5 and 1 years, were missed yesterday. Search resulted in recovering the body from the river with her youngest child clasped in her arms. The body of the other child was not found. Destitution was the cause. The husband is believed to be in Lincoln, Ill. Three small children are left. Adolph Max was a butcher in this city and left here years ago. His wife was a daughter of John Crouse. Max does not bear the best reputation and it is stated that he had deserted his wife and family. This is not certainly known. The dispatch above is all the news we have so far of the terrible deed. The Chicago Herald of Tuesday morning gave the following further particulars: LYONS, Iowa, August 13--- Yesterday Mrs. Adolph Max, aged about 40 years took her infant daughter Lizzie, aged 1 year, and her 5 year old son Lewis, and wading out into the Mississippi river, deliberately drowned herself and them. A little boy gave warning and in a few hours the bodies of the woman and infant were found. Some six weeks ago her husband left her in destitute circumstances, and since she has heard from him but once, from Lincoln, Ill. It is said fear of starvation, having no friends to appeal to, caused her to destroy herself. She left three children living, a girl and two boys. Her parents, who disapproved of her marriage, it is said, are well to do farmer in the vicinity of Boone Iowa. A verdict in accordance with the facts as known was rendered, and the parents will claim the remains. Boone County Democrat August 22, 1894
