Eilers Sophia Geistfield Eilers was born in Schaumberg, Ill. on the 10th day of November 1851. As an infant she was brought to the Lord in holy baptism. She attended the public schools at Schaumberg and was also confirmed in the Lutheran faith. It was in this home pervaded by the spirit and atmosphere of religion that the die was cast which moulded the child into the wife and mother of our acquaintance. When she was 17 years of age her parents moved to Johnson county Nebraska. Here she met John F. Eilers with whom she entered holy wedlock in the year of 1869. To this happy union 10 children were born. The wedded life of these people was especially blessed, inasmuch as they were permitted to pass the 56th anniversary of their troth. Of these years, 40 were spent on the home place now occupied by their son Edward. 16 years ago they moved to Sterling where they have lived in retirement. The deceased was a loving mother who had the welfare of her children both physically and spiritiually at heart. She was a loving, conscienceious wife, ever ready to share with her husband the sorrows of life as well as the joys. In motherly tenderness she ministered to the needs of her aged husband; to her his comfort and well-being was paramount to whom the precepts of religion were not only a matter of feeling but also of living. As a member of the Ladies Aid she always proved herself of open heart and open hand for every charitable undertaking. We knew Mrs. Eilers only as having a cheerful disposition and being well preserved for her age, although she had been complaining of rheumatism for the past few months. Her death was therefore a great shock to the entire community. On last Wednesday forenoon she paid her doctor a professional call. Upon her return she spoke to one of her daughters over the telephone, but broke off the conversation because of dizziness. Upon seating herself was stricken with apoplexy which put a sudden end to her life. Besides her sorrow sticken husband she leaves to mourn her sad demise 5 sons: John, Henry, Conrad and Edward of Sterling and Fred of Chicago, and three daughters, Mrs. Bernhard Menniga and Mrs. Harm Saathoff of Sterling and Mrs. Ed Fritsch of Lincoln. Two children preceded her in death. She leaves two brothers and five sisters; 25 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Her age at the time of her death was 73 years, 4 months and 21 days. The funeral services were held on last Sunday at 2 p.m. from St. John's Lutheran church, Rev. J. H. Moehl, pastor, of the church officiating both in German and English and was attended by one of the largest crowds of relatives, friends and neighbors ever witnessed. The church was not large enough to hold the vast throng by one-half. Interment was in the church cemetery north of town. May she rest in peace.
