Read More	SOPHIA EMELIA "SOPHIE" (PETER) TROUTMAN RITES HELD FOR COUNTY PIONEER Holyoke Enterprise Transcribed by Carol Moore February 19, 1959 Mrs. Sophia Troutman, pioneer teacher and Phillips County resident for more than 70 years passed away early last Thursday morning, February 12, at her home in Holyoke. She had been in declining health for some time and was 88 years of age. Services were conducted at the Holyoke Presbyterian church at 2:00 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Harold Rambo officiating. Interment was at Holyoke Memorial Park. Sophia Emelia Peter, daughter of Jacob and Margaretha Peter, was born November 23, 1870 at Wooster, Ohio. When she was 9 years of age, shortly after the death of her father, her mother and the children moved to Memphis, Missouri where they resided for nine years. In the spring of 1888 they came to this community and established their home on a homestead taken by her mother. The homestead was located nine miles northwest of Holyoke. At that time there were no established roads, only trails across the prairie, and Holyoke was a thriving village a little more than a year old. In 1890 Sophia Peter was united in marriage to Oscar Troutman and they moved to his homestead eight miles northwest of Holyoke, where Mrs. Troutman made her home for 55 years. Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Troutman, all of whom survive. Mrs. Troutman was one of the first teachers in this county, starting her first term of school in the fall of 1888. She was a member of Royal Neighbors of America and the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Mrs. Troutman's husband preceded her in death on September 28, 1933. She sold the home farm in 1945 and moved to Holyoke where she and a son, Arthur, made their home together. Mr. and Mrs. Troutman and their children became members of the Presbyterian church about 40 years ago. Surviving are two son, Verne P. Troutman, Osawatomie, Kansas and Arthur Troutman, Holyoke; two daughters, Bessie. Mrs. Henry T. Gassert, Holyoke, and Gladys, Mrs. Lloyd Scrivner, Moscow, Idaho; one brother, Theodore F. Peter, Bellflower, California, two grandsons, Ronald and Gary Scrivner, Moscow, Idaho, and other relatives and many friends. Out-of-town people who were here for the funeral included Mrs. Edna Sumpter and son, Max Fair, Earl Ellis and family and Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Ellis, Denver, and Mrs. Raymond Langley and Mrs. E.W.
