Friday Death came last night to a true pioneer of Columbus, when Mrs. William Becker, 81, resident here nearly 65 years, succumbed to a two-year illness at 11:55 p.m. at her home, 2715 Sixteenth street. She had been in failing health , suffering with a goitre. Later other conditions incident to her advanced age developed, and for the last several months she was in a semi invalid condition. Each day, however, she was permitted to leave her bed and sit in a chair for a few hours. Even yesterday she spent a few hours sitting up, but toward late afternoon a lung congestion developed, and because of her weakened condition she sank rapidly. She came to Columbus as a girl of 17, and lived continuously in the city until her death. As Miss Sophia Reese, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Reese, pioneer Platte county farmers, she was born on Jan. 17, 1856 in Germany. In 1873, with her parents, and her two brothers, William Reese, of Kearney, and George Reese, of Arapahoe, who survive her, they left their native Germany and came directly to Columbus. Mr. and Mrs. Reese took a homestead on the Monastary road 13 miles north of Columbus, but their daughter remained in Columbus at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Meier. Here she met William Becker, city clerk for 35 years prior to his death in February, 1929, a pioneer Columbus businessman, and their marriage took place on Nov. 19, 1874, in Columbus. First Mr. Becker was in the feed and grain business with his brother, Pete, and then opened a grocery store. Later he disposed of those interests and was elected to the office of city clerk. Mrs. Becker's life was devoted almost entirely to her home and her family. The exception was the time she gave to church work. She was affiliated with the Presbyterian church early in her life, and when the Presbyterian and Congregational churches joined in forming the Federated, she transferred her membership to the Federated church. Until her health broke and she was no longer able to be active, she was a member of the ladies aid society and took a great interest in the work. She is survived by a daughter, Miss Anna, who is at home; two sons, Karl Becker, sr., of Columbus, and Paul Becker, of Denison, Ia.; her two brothers, and two grandsons. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the home, with Rev. Ray H. Turner, pastor, officiating, and burial will be made in Columbus cemetary.
