Elgard, 73, a former Dannebrog resident died Friday at a St. Paul hospital following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, in Our Saviour's Lutheran Church at Dannebrog with the Rev. Walter Laughlin officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Visitation was to be from 3 to 9 p.m., Sunday, at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. Mrs. Elgard was born Dec. 1, 1900, near Nysted, to Mads and Serena Nielsen Christensen. She attended rural school and grew to womanhood in the area. She moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where she was employed at Grand View College. She returned to Dannebrog in 1934. She married Soren Elgard on May 10, 1934, at Ord. They farmed near Dannevirke until 1937, when they moved to Dannebrog where they operated a cafe and tavern until 1955, when they retired. Mr. Elgard died July 6, 1955. She made her home in Dannebrog until 1973, when she moved to a rest home in Wood River. She was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and the Rebekah Lodge of Dannebrog. Survivors include one step-son, Lynn Elgard of Oklahoma; two sisters, Mrs. Aleda Jacobsen of San Diego, Calif., and Mrs. Bergitta Jacobsen of St. Paul and two brothers, Chris of St. Paul and Sigurd of Farwell. She was also preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.
