Description	:	When Sophie Edna Isakson was born on August 23, 1912, on a farm near Upham, North Dakota, her father Olaf, was 34 and her mother, Ella, was 30. Sophie was the 4th of 8 children. Read More	When Sophie Edna Isakson was born on August 23, 1912, on a farm near Upham, North Dakota, her father Olaf, was 34 and her mother, Ella, was 30. Sophie was the 4th of 8 children. She said she had a very happy life on the farm with her brothers and sisters. She remembered the hay rides and the long winter sleigh rides to the schoolhouse on the North Dakota prairie. After completing high school, Sophie worked for awhile on neighboring farms caring for children or helping with the chores. With the onset of WWII, Sophie traveled with her sister, Minnie, to Seattle where she worked as a nanny and then in a TB ward for Japanese displaced persons. It was in Seattle where she met John William Coyle and turned down a nanny job in Anchorage, Alaska to marry John on October 23, 1942 in Fort Benning, GA where John was in officers training. Sophie had 2 sons and 2 daughters with John between 1943 and 1950. From 1946 to 2007, she lived in Seward, Nebraska where she raised her family. Sophie was a wonderful mother and favorite grandmother to her 8 grandchildren whom she was delighted to travel around the country to visit and care for. When she was not seeing them in person, she was baking and sending cookies all over the country. Sophie traveled to Australia, Russia, Poland, and Italy. In 1974, she visited cousins in Norway and Sweden and continued to correspond with them until her death. She died on April 13, 2008, in Canon City, Colorado, at the age of 95, and her ashes were buried in St Mary's Catholic Cemetery beside John's grave in Ulysses, Nebraska. Grandma A poem by Sophie's grandson, Kristofer Olsen Her name was Sophie, but I called her Grandma. Her favorite foods were chocolate and caramel with a cup of coffee. Marshallow squares, an endless parade of pancakes, dollar bills and apple pie, and cookies she would bake. All that we can still taste. We could have said "thanks" more often than we did, but she must have known how much we enjoyed it - - maybe not as much as she. Her card would arrive on every holiday, While her TV was tuned in to Final Jeopardy. Answer: My Grandma. Question: What is true love? We were careful, and we took care. Still, she worried, and that was fair because she was our Grandma. No matter how near or far, she was there for us. In a phone call or letter, she was our best friend, unconditionally. Yes, her name was Sophie, and we called her Grandma - - although she is still alive within our hearts and in Heaven, too.
