Description	:	John William Coyle was born on September 21, 1913 and grew up with his 2 older brothers on his parents' farm near Ulysses, NE. John attended Creighton Prep School in Omaha for his first 2 years of high school where he was first in his class. He graduated in 1926 from Ulysses High School. He was stationed in Seattle, WA and... Read More	John William Coyle was born on September 21, 1913 and grew up with his 2 older brothers on his parents' farm near Ulysses, NE. John attended Creighton Prep School in Omaha for his first 2 years of high school where he was first in his class. He graduated in 1926 from Ulysses High School. After graduation he worked on the family farm for a few years before traveling to Chicago and working there for a tobacco company. When WWII began, John enlisted in the army on May 27, 1941. He was stationed in Seattle, WA and in California before being sent to officers training school in Fort Benning, GA. It was in Ft. Benning where he married Sophie Isakson on October 21, 1942. On December 16, 1942 John was sent overseas and stationed in England before traveling to Scotland, Ireland, Iceland, and France. John was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and fought in the Normandy and Northern France Campaign. On the 13th of September 1944, as he was leading his unit toward Metz, he was shot in the left thigh and carried off the front. Before the battle was over half of the members of his company were killed or wounded. John's left leg was amputated and he was hospitalized in England before being sent back to the U.S. and hospitalized at the VA hospital in Brigham City, Utah. John received the American Defense Ribbon, one Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Purple Heart, American Theatre Ribbon, Victory Ribbon and the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with 2 Bronze Campaign Stars. He was honorably discharged in Brigham City, Utah on the 16th of July 1946 and promoted to Captain. After his recovery, his family settled in Seward, NE where John was appointed Veterans Service Officer. In a letter to Samuel Crews, an army buddy, John writes, "Started terminal leave April 1, 1946 and went to work selling tobacco on the road at La Crosse, WI . . My stump started causing trouble on account of the strenuousness of the work. The first of August, I quit and moved to Dad's farm in Nebraska. I landed my present job December 26. I like the job and was very fortunate to get it because at the present I can't wear my artificial leg . . I don't feel that I am yet out of reconversion alley. I hope that soon I shall sight the highway of worthwhile accomplishment." In 1948 he was elected Seward County Treasurer and Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, positions he held until his death in 1971. John also worked evenings on his parents farm near Ulysses and enjoyed building and road trips. John drove the family to New York, Yellowstone, North Dakota and in 1954 an epic "9-day motor trip to California. Points visited on the 4200 mile tour included Denver, Gallup, Flagstaff, Boulder Dam, Las Vegas, LA, San Fran., Reno, Salt Lake City, and Cheyenne." He had 2 sons and 2 daughters with Sophie Isakson between 1943 and 1950. John became ill in 1970 and was later diagnosed with myastemia gravis. He died on August 21, 1971 in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 57,
