Spence Mitchell, an old resident of this county, living north of town on the old Bacon farm, died suddenly of heart failure this afternoon about 5 o'clock in front of Bloomheart, Wright & Co.'s store. He has been sick for the past three or four months. The past month he has been scarcely able to go around. Chanute Daily Tribune, 16 Sept 1902, Page 4 Was Old Settler Spence Mitchell Came to Neosho Co in 1872-Death caused quite a sensation The sudden death of Spencer M. Mitchell late yesterday afternoon caused quite a sensation on Main Street. He was sitting in the stairway just east of the Wallace barber shop when he fell over dying inside of five minutes. As told in last evening's Tribune, his health has been very poorly for several months and for two months he he has had spells with his heart. Yesterday he was feeling worse than ususal and ate no dinner. The funeral service was held this afternoon at the home of his son-in-law, D.M. Wells on N. Santa Fe Ave. Rev. Pulliam conducted the service. Mr. Mitchell was an old resident of this county coming here in 1872 and is well known by all the old timers. He lived in Chanute many years then moved to the Beach farm north of town where he has since resided. He was born in Polk County, Mo., Dec 29, 1853, moving to Lynn (Lyon) County with his parents in 1857. He was married to Miss Della Likes of Chanute, Dec. 29, 1879. He leaves a wife, five children, two brothers, and two sisters. Chanute Daily Sun, 16 Sept 1902, Page 4 Buried Today The funeral of Spencer M. Mitchell, who dropped dead in front of Bloomheart & Wrights yesterday afternoon was held this afternoon at the home of his son-in-law D. M. Wells on north Santa Fe avenue at 3 o'clock. Rev. I. B. Pulliam conducting the services. Interment was made in Elmwood cemetery.
