Read More	Sister Alma (Josephine) Hartung, 90, of Mother of God Monastery in Watertown, SD, died Thursday, June 27, 2013, at Estelline Nursing Home and Care Center. Sister Alma (Josephine) was born on October 3, 1922, to Frank and Elizabeth (Mullenberg) Hartung at Hoven, SD. Her parents were farmers and she attended St. Anthony's School for seven years – the third grade in a rural school. She attended Mount Marty High School, Yankton, and entered Sacred Heart Convent; professed vows on June 24, 1940, and later in 1961 transferred these vows to Mother of God Monastery, of which she was a founding member. Sister was a graduate of Mount Marty College and University of South Dakota, Vermillion. She taught school in Glen Ullin and Selfridge, ND; Holy Trinity High, Hartington, NE; Mount Marty High School and College; St. Mary's, Aberdeen; Immaculate Conception, Stephan; and Harmony Hill High School, Watertown. She received National Science Foundation grants from Laramie, WY, in the Physical Sciences; College of St. Teresa, Winona, MN, in Chemistry; and Notre Dame, IN, in Geological Science. Sister was certified for Pastoral Care by the National Conference of Catholic Chaplains; instrumental in establishing the Chaplaincy Department at Dakota Midland Hospital, Aberdeen; and the Homebound Ministry Program for St. Mary's Parish, Aberdeen. Sister Alma returned to the monastery in October, 1998, and helped with daily ministries there. In February 2007, she moved to St. Benedict's, Pierre, returned to Watertown in 2008 and lived in Benet Place Assisted Living until her recent transfer to Estelline Nursing Home. Crocheting was her hobby. Survivors include her Sisters of Mother of God Monastery; brother, John, of Huron; sisters: Anna Marie Frost, Bowdle, Juanita (Dwayne) Nelson, Longmont, CO, Mary (Neil) Nelson, Eau Claire, WI, and Alice (Wally) Lureen, Shakopee, MN; and many nieces and nephews and their families. Sister Alma was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Elizabeth; her stepmother, Mary; six brothers: Henry, Edward, Matt, Nick, Bernard and Pete; and two sisters, Regina Hericks and Loretta Abler.
