Placing the pall on Bernard's casket will be Carly Hartung, Kristen Hartung, Kaylee Herreid, Lyndsey Hartung, Callie Hartung, and Mandy Kenny. There will be a Wake Service at the Church 7:00 PM Thursday with visitation beginning 5:00 PM. Bernard Mathias Hartung, known by friends as Fritz, was born to Mary A. (Gerber) and Frank Hartung at Bowdle, SD on January 19, 1926. He was raised near Hoven and attended St. Bernard's Catholic School. He served his country in the United States Army, entering the service on October 28, 1950 and earning the rank of SGT-T. Following his honorable discharge on July 28, 1952 he returned to Hoven. He married Lucille Schmidt at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Seneca, SD on June 16, 1953. They lived and farmed 4 miles west and ¼ mile south of Hoven. In the fall of 1993 they retired and moved into Hoven where Fritz lived the rest of his life. He was an active parishioner of St. Anthony's Church and was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. For over 50 years he belonged to the John J. Peters American Legion Post No. 159, Hoven. He enjoyed working and visiting at J&J's Shop, owned by his son Jerry. He also enjoyed watching boxing, rodeos, and baseball on TV as well as western movies. In his younger years he enjoyed playing cards and watching his sons in demolition derbies. He is survived by Lucille, his wife of 53 years; 4 sons—Jerry (Janet) Hartung, Joe Hartung, and Larry (Amy) Hartung all of Hoven, and Ed Hartung of Sioux Falls, SD; 2 daughters—Dorothy (Rick) Hixon of Phoenix, AZ and Patty (Rob) Lamb of Kalispell, Montana; 1 brother-John Hartung of Huron, SD; 6 sisters—Sister Alma Hartung of Pierre, SD, Regina (Norbert) Hericks and Anna Marie Frost of Hoven; Juanita (Dwayne) Nelson of Longmont, CO, Mary (Neil) Nelson of Eau Claire, WI, and Alice (Wally) Lureen of Shakopee, MN; 19 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Family members preceding Bernard in death were his parents, 5 brothers (Henry, Matt, Peter, Ed, and Nick), 1 sister (Loretta Abler), and a daughter-in-law (Steph Hartung). Casketbearers will be Cory Hartung of Rapid City, SD, Brady Hartung of Bowman, ND., Michael Hartung of Watertown, SD, Jesse Hartung and Zachery Hartung of Hoven, and Josh Hartung of Spearfish, SD. Lien Funeral Home of Bowdle is in charge of arrangements.
