Selma Elizabeth Janssen was born January 10, 1908, to Frank and Frances (Holzbauer) Janssen in the family home near Crofton, NE. She was the fourth of nine children. Her first ten years of education were at a Cedar County country school across the road from her home. Her last two years of high school were at Mount Marty Academy where she graduated in 1926. She entered Sacred Heart Monastery in September of 1926, made first profession in 1929 and her final profession on June 23, 1935. In 1931, she received an Advanced Piano Teachers Certificate from the Art Publication Society of St. Louis. The following summer she attended the Pius X School of Liturgical Music in New York City and later earned her BA degree from Mount Marty College. Her ministry included 63 years as a music teacher and organist at Catholic schools and parishes in Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Virginia. During this time she participated in many piano and organ workshops. From 1982-1999 she served as the monastery care center organist. Though small of stature from an incurable spinal ailment, S. Annella had a big heart for her many music students, always rejoicing with them in their accomplishments and successes. She had a gracious smile and a ready "thank you" to anyone she met. S. Annella is survived by her Benedictine community and three sisters: Sister Dorothy Janssen of Sacred Heart Monastery; Ethel Hesse of Majestic Bluffs, Yankton; and Eleanor Buschelman, Fordyce, NE plus many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two brothers. Yankton Press & Dakotan
