Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Oliva Janssen, was born March 15, 1910, on the family homestead near Crofton, NE. She was the fifth of nine children of Frank and Frances (Holzbauer) Janssen. Their farm was across the road from a small village known as Beaver Creek which consisted of a church, priest's house and a public school. It was at this school that Oliva received her education including two years of high school. She received religious instruction every day after school. She often spent her recess time in the church praying and felt called to religious life at an early age. When she was 15, she entered Mount Marty Academy in Yankton. Influenced by the lives of her Benedictine teachers, Oliva became more convinced that God was calling her to religious life. She entered Sacred Heart Monastery in October, 1927 and became Novice Dorothy in August of 1928. In 1929, she made her first profession and her final profession in 1935. Her sister Selma, S. Annella, also entered in 1927. S. Dorothy spent nearly all her years of active ministry as a music teacher in elementary schools in Nebraska, Colorado, North and South Dakota. She was also the organist and choir director in many of the parishes. She cites her time in Richardton, ND as one of great joy when she could participate in the liturgies at Assumption Abbey. She also loved her time with the Native American students in Chamberlain because her mother and uncle had been involved in the early work among the Native Americans at Lower Brule near there. She took great pride in the accomplishments of her many students. A profound hearing loss limited some of her activities, but she never lost her love of music. S. Dorothy is survived by her Benedictine community; two sisters, Ethel Hesse, Yankton and Eleanor Buschelman, Fordyce; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, and two brothers. Yankton Press & Dakotan
