Helen Cecilia Baker, one of 10 children of Alice Jane Carrigan and Martin James Baker, was born in Atchison in 1909 .She attended St. Louis College, an elementary school, and Mount St. Scholastica Academy. Helen Cecilia Baker, one of 10 children of Alice Jane Carrigan and Martin James Baker, was born in Atchison in 1909 .She attended St. Louis College, an elementary school, and Mount St. Scholastica Academy. After her graduation from the Academy she joined the Benedictine Sisters in 1930 and made her monastic profession in 1931. She held a baccalaureate degree from Mount St. Scholastica College, a master of arts and a doctorate in English from the Catholic University of America. Sister Imogene was associated with Mount St. Scholastica College as an instructor, as chair of the English department and as academic dean from 1937 to 1962 when she was named director of formation for the community. In 1972 she founded and became director of the Institute on Monastic Life: Center for Benedictine Studies, a summer program which brought outstanding Benedictine scholars to the Mount and students from many Benedictine houses. The Center continued into the 1980's. From 1946 to 1948 she was editor of the magazine of the Benedictine Sisters, Benedictine Review (now Benedictines). In 1950, Sister Imogene was nominated to the American Benedictine Academy and was executive secretary of that group from 1972 to 1975. In 1976, Sister Imogene was invited to be one of the four associate editors who worked with Father Timothy Fry , St. Benedict's Abbey, to make a new translation of The Rule of St. Benedict to commemorate the fifteen hundredth anniversary of the birth of St. Benedict. This scholarly work was published in 1980 with the title, RB 1980: The Rule of St. Benedict in Latin and English with Notes. As long as her health permitted Sister Imogene taught classes for the novices and was a frequent lecturer and consultant on Benedictine spirituality for many Benedictine houses, including one in Australia and one in Brazil. Sister Imogene was preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters and is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
